ADA B. WIEN

CLASS OF 2009

Ada B. Wien was elected to be a delegate from Fairbanks to the Constitutional Convention. She was one of six women to serve as delegates. She was appointed to three Convention committees: Preamble and Bill of Rights, serving as Vice-Chair, Resources, and the Advisory Committee on Committees. On Day 40 of the Constitutional Convention, she responded to a (male) delegate’s objection that she was being prompted on how to vote, by stating: “I would just like to go on record as saying I do my own thinking…”

A housewife, secretary, and businesswoman, she is remembered every year when the University of Alaska Fairbanks awards a student the Noel & Ada Wien Memorial Scholarship.
